What is a cello?

In the violin family, it is the second-largest bowed string instrument after the double bass. It is played in a sitting position, with the player sitting on a stool or chair with the instrument placed between their knees.
The sound of a cello is produced by moving a bow across the strings or by plucking the strings with your fingers. Like the violin, most cellos have four strings, tuned to C-G-D-A. The cello produces a sound much lower than the violin or viola and is known as the tenor voice of the violin family.

What are they made of?

Cellos are made from various materials, each of which can affect the sound and value of the instrument. Traditionally, cellos are made of wood, but the type of wood used to make the cello can vary.
The two most common types of wood used for making cellos are spruce and maple. The top plate, also known as the belly or the front of the instrument, is made of spruce, while the ribs and back are made of maple. These woods are used because they are both strong and lightweight, allowing the cello to produce the deep and resonant sounds it is known for.

The neck, fingerboard, and pegs are usually made from ebony, a dense hardwood that is perfect for withstanding the tension produced by the cello strings. The bridge is also typically made from maple, while the tailpiece is made from ebony, rosewood, or boxwood. The tailpiece is far from being a decorative piece; it mainly serves to hold the strings in place and provide an anchor for them.

The strings of the cello can also be made from different materials, including steel, gut, and synthetic materials. The most commonly used materials in modern cellos are steel and synthetic materials.

Cello bows

Pernambuco is the most valuable of the three materials, but it is also the most challenging to work with. It is a dense and heavy wood that requires a lot of skill to carve. If you prefer a more affordable option, we also have Brazilwood bows that offer excellent value for money. Brazilwood is often used by students and beginner cellists, but it can also be used by professionals. It is easy to carve, making it an excellent choice for bow makers. The last material often used in cello bow construction is carbon fiber. Carbon fiber cello bows are the most durable and are not affected by changes in humidity and temperature. They are the preferred option for outdoor performances and for playing in hot and humid climates.

Cello strings

Our cello strings are available in steel or synthetic materials. The type of string chosen affects the sound of your cello, as well as the playing experience. Steel strings are popular among beginners and students because they are durable and affordable. They produce a bright and clear sound and offer a quick response. The only downside is that they can sound harsh in the higher registers. Synthetic strings are the most popular strings among professionals. They offer a rich and warm sound full of complexity. They are also more durable and stable than steel strings, making them an excellent overall investment.
