The flute family of instruments has been used throughout human history and is found in many cultures around the world. The oldest known flutes are made of bone or ivory and are estimated to be over 40,000 years old!
Over the ages, flutes have been made from various materials, including wood, metal, and even clay. The European flute as we know it today was developed in the 1800s and has since become a staple of classical and jazz music.
The Different Types of Flutes
The flute family consists of five main types: the recorder, piccolo, concert flute, alto flute, bass flute, and the Pan flute, though less common in the Western world, is also considered a type of flute.
The Recorder
The recorder is one of the oldest known musical instruments. It is commonly regarded as a beginner’s flute and is often the first instrument students learn in school. Recorders are generally made of wood, plastic, or resin.
The Piccolo
The piccolo is a smaller flute commonly used in orchestras and marching bands. This instrument is tuned one octave higher than the concert flute and has a very high, bright tone. The piccolo is much smaller than the concert flute, measuring about thirty centimeters in length.
The Concert Flute
The concert flute, also known as the C flute, is the most commonly recognized type of flute. It is the standard flute used in orchestras, marching bands, and jazz ensembles. Concert flutes are typically made of silver, gold, or a combination of metals, and feature a wide variety of keys and accessories. At Twigg Musique, we offer new, used, and professional concert flutes as well as concert flute heads from renowned brands such as Sankyo, Powell, Haynes, Miyazawa, Brannen Brothers, and more.
The Alto Flute
The alto flute is a lower-pitched flute and is considered a member of the concert flute family. This flute is about 33% longer than the concert flute and is tuned in G. The alto flute has a much lower and softer tone than the concert flute and is less common. At Twigg Musique, we offer alto flutes from renowned brands such as Yamaha, Di Zhao, Powell, Haynes, and Sankyo.
The Bass Flute
The bass flute is the lowest-pitched flute in the flute family. It is a very large instrument, measuring about 115 cm, and is much longer than the concert flute or the alto flute. Bass flutes are rare, but they produce a soft and unique tone.
The Pan Flute
The Pan flute, also known as Panpipes, consists of a series of tubes bound together and is the most distinctive type of flute. It is one of the oldest known types of flutes and is commonly associated with traditional Andean music. The Pan flute is played by blowing air across the opening and is held vertically.
